ASMTP, or Authenticated SMTP, allows you to send messages out from your computer without using your regular ISP's email server. This is useful if you are using a laptop in a coffee shop or other public space, and don't want to figure out how to reconfigure your mail program. It's also useful if your ISP does not allow you to send email with a return address that does not point back to them.
