If you like to use public wireless hotspots, you may want to consider using POP over SSL and ASMTP with SSL to encrytpt your email traffic over the air. Using ASMTP also means that you don't have to change your outgoing email server if the hotspot does not proxy SMTP.
Open Outlook Express and select "Tools:Accounts"

Add or modify an existing account as needed. If your account already exists, select it and click "Properties"

If you have previously set up your service with the name "mail.midasnetworks.com" you will need to change the name to "ns1.midasnetworks.com" to prevent getting annoying warnings about certificates.

Click on the "Servers" tab and set your incoming and outgoing mail servers to "ns1.midasnetworks.com"
You MUST click the checkbox "My server requires authentication" or you will not be able to send mail.

Click on the "Settings" and confirm that "Use same settings as my incoming mail server" is selected. Click OK to return to the properties sheet.

Click on "Advanced" and set the "Outgoing mail (SMTP) port number to "465"
Make certain that both boxes that say "This server requires a secure connection (SSL)" are checked.

Click "OK" and you should be able to send and receive email over SSL connections.
